Bioidentical Hormones

It’s all about restoring your hormonal balance with Bioidentical Hormone Therapy.

Men and women of all ages can experience hormonal changes throughout their lives and bioidentical hormones can provide relief. BHRT (Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy) is for the treatment of hormone deficiencies or imbalances using only molecules that are identical to the hormones found in the human body.

Hormonal changes can occur due to age such as with perimenopause, menopause, and andropause. However, there are many other factors that can influence balance including diet, lifestyle, pregnancy, illness, stress, and even some medications.

Hormones are chemical messengers that affect just about every physiological process in the human body. They also work synergistically with each other. Many times, if one hormone level is disrupted, others may be as well.

Restoring hormonal balance has many positive health benefits in addition to providing relief from symptoms. We offer extensive laboratory testing to specifically identify which hormones might need regulating as well as other factors that may be affecting your hormone balance. This testing also looks at other health markers which provide a whole-body picture so that optimal hormone balance can be achieved. They will prescribe only bioidentical hormones that are produced to exacting standards in qualified compounding pharmacies. These products are designed to mirror the hormones naturally produced by the body.

What is Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy?

Bioidentical hormonesBioidentical hormones are typically plant-derived substances that are an exact replica of hormones produced in the body. In essence, they have identical chemical structures. Although both are created in labs, the difference between bioidentical hormones and synthetic hormones is that synthetic ones are not identical to the hormones created in your body.

BHRT utilizes these natural hormones to restore levels and optimize health and wellness. While the average life expectancy has significantly increased, hormones still begin to decline as we age which can result in an extended period of one’s life living with suboptimal hormone levels.

BHRT Can Help with Many Symptoms and Conditions:

weight lossWeight Control

Weight Control – There is a myriad of hormones that are the culprits that lead to weight loss difficulties and resistance. Overall body composition is greatly dependent on having balanced hormones, a healthy digestive tract, a balanced diet, and an awareness of food sensitivities.

chronic fatigueFatigue & Energy Loss

Fatigue and Energy Loss – Aging can change hormone levels which contribute to feelings of fatigue and low energy. A number of different factors can cause this such as diet and stress, but persistent symptoms can be corrected through lab testing and balancing the various hormones that stabilize the body’s endocrine system.

lost libidoLost Libido

Lost Libido – A combination of factors can cause loss of sex drive. Proper testing is needed to determine optimal strategies to help any experiencing a lost or low libido. A thorough treatment program is developed to help individuals dramatically improve their sex lives.

sleeplessness

Sleeplessness

Sleeplessness – One of the most frustrating problems that people experience as they get older is the ability to sleep. Other life factors can affect sleep quality and quantity but hormone replacement offers an effective approach to drastically improving sleep.

memory-loss-and-concentrationMemory Loss & Concentration

Memory Loss and Inability to Focus – Tired of losing your car keys? Do you walk into a room and forget what you went in there for? Loss of mental acuity does not have to be a daily by-product of aging. Optimal hormonal balance can dramatically improve your ability to concentrate, remember, and be more productive and effective in your daily activities.

skin-tone-and-appearanceSkin Tone & Appearance

Skin Tone and Appearance – Our skin often reflects the state of our general health. Imbalanced hormones, nutritional deficiencies, lack of sleep, and lifestyle can lead to premature aging which shows up in our skin. It can become thinner, more wrinkly, and saggy. BHRT can help restore skin problems and provide a more youthful appearance.

Hair Loss

Hair loss – This is especially impactful to women whose self-esteem can be drastically affected if they begin to lose their hair or have bald spots. Often, this is a result of hormone and nutritional deficiencies and can be easily corrected once the cause is determined by lab work.

Hormone Imbalances

Imbalanced hormone levels do not usually happen suddenly. They are often the result of cumulative effects of physiological and mental stressors which compromise overall health as well as the endocrine system. However, even for those people who are in the best of health, hormonal levels will decline as part of the aging process.

Bioidentical hormones, along with a healthy diet, exercise, and good sleep habits can greatly assist the body in returning to a more healthful state. Other symptoms of hormonal imbalance include:

  • Loss of muscle mass/increased fat
  • Irregular periods and/or infertility
  • Hot flashes and night sweats
  • Headaches/Migraines
  • Anxiety and/or depression
  • Irritability
  • Acne
  • Hair growth in unwanted areas such as on the face
  • Muscle and joint pain
  • Painful sex
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Abnormal cholesterol levels
  • Insulin resistance
  • Osteoporosis/loss of bone mass
  • Decreased ability to handle stress
  • Loss of vitality

Bioidentical Hormones and Anti-Aging Services

The process of aging causes all individuals, regardless of sex, to experience varied and unique symptoms as their hormone levels change over time. Perimenopause (the transition from childbearing years to menopause) and menopause usually occur gradually. However, if a woman undergoes a hysterectomy at any age, symptoms can come on quite suddenly. Even if the ovaries are not removed, their function can still decrease because removal of the fallopian tubes can disrupt their blood supply. If the ovaries are removed as well, menopausal symptoms can be much more severe.

Men experience hormonal changes as they age too. It’s called Andropause, which can cause some of the same general symptoms as with women such as foggy thinking, decreased sex drive, decreased muscle mass, etc. Testosterone levels will gradually drop so that by the time a man is 50, he will have about half of the levels that he did in his twenties. Diet, lifestyle, sleep, and stress can affect hormones too which is why it’s important to check all levels. Balancing hormones can not only alleviate symptoms but can help prevent and/or better manage chronic diseases or conditions.

About Our Providers at Leigh Ann Scott MD

Bioidentical hormones

Dr. Leigh Ann Scott is board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and is a Fellow with the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. She has been practicing for 20 years and for the last 6 years, she has focused on individual wellness programs for her patients that balance hormones and restore vitality. She has created a practice designed to provide you with one-on-one personalized attention and will design a plan that is individualized to your needs. As a medical doctor specializing in Gynecology, she has experience in dealing with health issues and specialized training in the use of bio-identical hormones and other therapies that help you achieve your goals of looking and feeling younger. As a woman who has experienced many of these symptoms herself, she understands the personal and private struggles the hormone imbalance can create in one’s life.

Dr. Scott is devoted to understanding her patient’s desires, goals, and needs. She accomplishes this by listening carefully as you discuss your symptoms, experiences, and feelings. This communication, coupled with specific lab testing, helps to determine the “root cause” of why a person feels a certain way. Focusing on prevention, Dr. Scott encourages her patients to preserve and promote long-term wellness by taking proactive measures towards achieving optimal health and wellness. Dr. Scott’s knowledge and understanding of health help her design the right protocol of hormone balance, nutrition, supplement support, weight management, and if indicated, food sensitivity testing.

Quality, uninterrupted time with your doctor means everything. In order to provide comprehensive care and address your health care concerns, Dr. Scott’s appointments are scheduled hourly.

Nurse Practitioner

Nurse Practitioner Elise Clark’s early training included critical care, surgical care, and women’s health. It was during her time that her interest in hormones began to pique. She saw first-hand that she could help people feel much better and safely elevate their lives with hormones. Elise went on to practice in Family Medicine which helped her become very well-rounded. She still felt passionate about hormones and went on to work in the field of Endocrinology for several years. However, she realized that she was not able to help people like she wanted to in a traditional medical environment. She wanted to focus on her patients more holistically incorporating nutrition, disease prevention, and education into her practice. This is how she Dr. Leigh Ann Scott. We welcome her knowledge, compassion, and experience in helping our patients improve their quality of life.

Elise follows the same procedures as Dr. Scott for both men and women, formulating the right protocol of hormone balance, nutrition, supplement support, and weight management. Her endocrinology background has also afforded her experience and knowledge in treating thyroid disorders. She works closely with her patients, gains a full understanding of what they have been experiencing and, with the correct use of diagnostic tools and labs, she works to find the underlying causes of symptoms and address these to achieve long-term wellness for each of her patients.

Formerly, Kimberley had formal training in psychology and alternative medicine/acupressure. She also received her master’s degree from the University of San Diego. Above all, she is committed to the philosophies of preventative medicine and treating the patient as a whole.

“When you look beyond symptoms and disease,” she says, “and take time to truly understand the history in which they were born, you are able to treat the root of the problem, minimize (if not eliminate) symptoms, and enable the patient to head off a multitude of potential complications.”

She also uses a functional medicine approach to anti-aging, using hormones, diet, exercise, nutraceuticals, and supplements. Debra worked in Family Practice during the early part of her career. She has been working with Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy since 2011.

Physician Assistant

Physician Assistant Kam Neal has loved medicine her entire life. Growing up in Colorado, she remembers previously being fascinated with investigating how things worked. Kam attended Southern Nazarene University in Bethany, Oklahoma, where she received a bachelor of science in biology. She also earned a master’s degree in health services from the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center upon completing the physician associate program. She is a certified Physician Assistant and licensed by the Texas Medical Board.

Previously, in the traditional medical model, Kam felt frustrated working in a high-volume practice with barely enough time to refill medications and then not seeing her patients feel any better. In addition, her own experience with hormone imbalances after having children and being told “everything is normal” fueled those feelings more, leading her to functional medicine and an optimal wellness model of medicine.

Kam’s desire to treat the whole patient and not just the symptoms, along with her passion for teaching, is evident as she loves working with each patient to find the root cause of their illness while teaching them about their health, so they feel informed and empowered.

Insurance Coverage

In order to delve more deeply and locate underlying causes of conditions and to provide optimal treatment, we find that we need much more time with our patients and more treatment options than insurance companies are willing to work with, for instance. Thus we are out of network for insurance.

However, if you have a PPO type of insurance plan, it is possible that your insurance will reimburse you for some or all of your office visit costs. Minimally, the costs should be able to go toward your deductible. You will pay for the appointments at the time of service and we can provide you with the necessary papers to file for reimbursement with your insurance provider. If you are on an HMO plan, most likely your insurance will not cover any of the costs of your office visits, but will likely cover all or a majority of your lab work.

Regarding the comprehensive lab work that will be required, many insurance plans will cover your labs. However, we do recommend that you check with your insurance company to make sure as some plans have changed how they pay for labwork and may require you to meet your deductible before your insurance pays anything for labs. This could mean a significant increase in your cost of labwork. In order to better serve our patients, we can offer you a significant discount through Quest Diagnostics or LabCorp for self-pay. We are also able to help you arrange to have a blood draw done at your own home for a nominal fee.

Current Covid Protocols in Place

We sanitize rooms between patients and shared surfaces such as door handles, etc., throughout the day.

Should you choose to have a telemedicine appointment, you will still be able to see your provider, just as if she were standing in front of you in the office so that you’ll still get the same “connection” as if your appointment was in the clinic. Additionally, we have mobile phlebotomy services available if you do not want to go to a public lab.
